I Am 80s Cafe at SS4c/5, Taman Rasa Sayang Petaling Jaya – Definitely one of the more meaningful cafes we have visited in the month of August.

Yeap, both of us are born in 80s. Thus, sitting together with the owner of I Am 80s Cafe, Mr. Dong who is also born in 80s (this explains why the cafe is named so), we are happy to have a good long chat with him, reminiscing the-very-good-old-days of our childhood.
“80s is a very special decade, whereby it bridges the beginning and ending of many things. Look at those gramophone discs on wall, they faded in the early of 80s, as cassette began taking over. When 80s came to an end, cassettes were replaced by CDs.” he said.
Can’t agree with this more. We saw the transition of these 10 years into a more industrialized, modernized world. In 1980s, you were a lucky kid if you had a Gameboy or Tamagotchi. Today, a child can easily get touch screen digital handheld devices, gadgets. Show them a Gameboy, don’t think they will love that.
Putting aside the much highlighted memories of 80s, I Am 80s Cafe environment is designed to live up to its name, with some time honoured knick-knacks, yet not entirely. The actual version may not turn out same as his initial idea, but Mr.Dong deserved loud applause for the efforts he has put in. He designed everything on his own, working closely with the team for decorations arrangement, deciding wall colours , sourcing furnitures, etc..
Glad that the outcome is very unique, thoughtfully loaded with ornaments. Each furniture has their own style, self-painted tabletop, wooden cable spool, old-fashion stool, all sum up I Am 80s Cafe to a very photography-worthy place. They have pet friendly day too. Stay tune for their Facebook, or give them a call to check out if pets were allowed before on your visit day. Events reservations are more than welcome, their underground area can fits 50 pax at one time.

Being an experienced chef himself, he understands the science of food more than us. Mr Dong was once the head chef for one of the most famous themed cafe in Malaysia, which has now switched their market attention to mainland China and growing really well. Hence, food quality in I Am 80s Cafe is rest assured to be as promising as the cafe’s appearance.

Besides, I Am 80s Cafe is a restaurant that appreciate interactions with customer. They always believe that talking to customers, getting feedback and suggestions are important. We somehow love the containers storing their freshly prepared Frozen Fruits Smoothies and asked if we could bring back home. And they answered: Of Course. You can re-use them. ^.^V.
What’s more is, when you walk into I Am 80s Cafe and find the menu list doesn’t suit your palate, try to enquire the staffs what else they can offer. At times, dishes are not limited to only selections on I Am 80s Cafe menu, such as this Sarawak Laksa – Wonderful taste, richly flavoured, packed with ooph. So, ask, or regret later for missing the chance to try out chef’s special. New suggestions will be taken into account too. Trust us, he is a chef, creating new dishes for customers is always his pleasure. Who knows, he might come out with food that is named after you.
For I Am 80s Cafe permanent menu, diners can enjoy Lunch Set, Dinner Set, personal ala-carte choices like sandwiches, soup, salad, pasta, chicken chops, fish & chips, grilled lamb rack, as well as American big breakfast available only on Saturday and Sunday.
If you come in group, do not miss the chance to order 80’s Signature Platter which can fit 4 to 5 persons! Get ready with a big stomach and indulge in half roasted chicken, breaded fish fillet, fries, corn cobs, 12 inches long sausage on sandwich buns, deep fried onion rings, hashed browns, toasted bread spread with pesto sauce and garden salad! Eat like a king!
We especially love the BBQ sauce made in house, with a taste between Western and Eastern style. Smoky sweet, tangy with a little tom yum-like spiciness, deeply infused with aroma of lemongrass. Ample of flavours, so nice that we just can’t stop dipping every element on the platter with it. Obviously much better that your store bought chilli sauce, mayo sauce or tomato sauce.
Coming to dessert, we tried out this bread & butter pudding served on sizzling iron plate, a sweet treat which has gone wild on I Am 80s Cafe Instagram check-ins. Differ from many other cafes which generally use chocolate brownie as base, chef turns to homemade bread & butter pudding, topped with square cut vanilla ice cream, drizzled with chocolate and custard sauce.
Summergirl said she can finish the entire dessert on her own, as the bread & butter pudding is more mellow, softer, less cloying compared to chocolate brownie which is very heavy and dense to the palate. Half chocolate sauce and half custard sauce are used, instead of only chocolate sauce. This is to balance up the overall sweetness, seeing that chocolate denotes a significant amount of sweetness.
S’mores dip, again, Summergirl’s favourite. Browned marshmallows on top, melted chocolate beneath the mini pot. Take a piece of biscuit, rolled up the gooey marshmallow and dig up as many chocolate as you can, then pop into your mouth. This isn’t a delicate dessert, and is sweet, but it brings back childhood memories. We were once a child loved scooping chocolate sauce with these finger biscuit, that we sometimes called it “cigarette’ due to its shape.
Traditional kopi and teh tarik, as those you can get at local Chinese kopitiam and mamak stall. Love the idea of making in into “younger” version by filling into cute plastic bottle.

We had a great night at I Am 80s Cafe, thanks to the hospitality of Mr. Dong and staffs. Will drop by again and hope that we will be lucky enough to have their Sarawak Laksa again. It is really awesome.
