Nong & Jimmy Thai Seafood BBQ Restaurant – more than a decade in Taman Cahaya, Ampang Kuala Lumpur and still maintaining good reputation as one of the best restaurants in KL serving good grilled seafood. Nong & Jimmy successfully withstand competition from many restaurants surfaced in town throughout the years, continues growing to be more famous with brisk business everyday as the night falls.
It isn’t easy to find Nong & Jimmy Thai seafood BBQ but it shouldn’t be a problem to locate with some help from navigation apps. It is within a neighbourhood area near to Yamaha Ampang. The restaurant welcomes diners with a spacious FOC carpark, car washing service and Nong & Jimmy is just right beside. Do not expect much from the interior, just foldable plastic tables and chairs, sheltered by zinc roof. Hot and stuffy during our visit, but who cares, since food were good.
Nong & Jimmy Thai Seafood BBQ opens from 6PM through 11PM, closed every Monday. The restaurant started to filled up around 7PM and by 8PM, it was already full house. Trays after trays of seafood goodness are churned out from the busy kitchen, flames and heat getting high up at the grilling section. Prawns, crabs, fish, squid, cockles, all gracefully lined up over BBQ pit heated with red hot charcoal.
Extensive selections isn’t the highlights in Nong & Jimmy menu. Apparently, Nong & Jimmy menu is rather focused. Look up at the board hang up at the kitchen, these are the food they offered – less than 20 choices, putting together Thai and local Chinese delights. Generally, Tomyum soup and BBQ seafood are the popular orders here.
Mango Salad RM12
Begin with mango salad, a traditional Thai-style appetizer that is tastebud tickling, tossing shredded green mango, chili and roasted peanuts together to reach for a tangy, refreshing twist with lots of crunch.
Grilled Squid RM18
Thinly sliced grilled squid, laced with hints of smokiness.
Crab RM70/KG
Go for Nong & Jimmy signature original grilled crabs if you like tucking into natural sweetness of this crustacean. Check out crab stir fried with sauces if you want more flavours. We sampled both, and prefer the former.
Prawn Cake
Our favourite, highly recommended dish in Nong & Jimmy. Surprisingly the best among all. Bite through the crispy, golden brown outer layer and enjoy mouthful of bounciness, juiciness ooze from the fresh, pipping hot prawn filling. Dip with Thai sauce served aside for sweet & spicy touch.
Tom Yum RM15 (small)/ RM30 (big)
Red hot tom yum soup laid in claypot, still bubbling when served to the table. Heaped with generous amount of prawns, squid and mushroom, tingled with fiery hot, tongue numbing spiciness.
Stir Fried Prawns with Egg Floss RM42/KT
If prawn cake took the crown in our dinner at Nong & Jimmy and BBQ crab come second, Stir Fried Prawns with Egg Floss would be the third. This is a rather familiar, crowd-pleasing dish, having sizable prawns topped with liberal amount of egg floss. Hmm yeah, as usual, we enjoy munching into the crunchy, snowy egg floss aside from the fresh prawns in firm texture.
Grilled Stingray RM20
Stringray basted with Thai curry sauce, placed on banana leaf, wrapped with aluminium foil and put to grill. A bit overcooked to our liking, leading to dry and mushy texture, rather pale taste overall.
Steamed Fish RM40 (siakap)/ RM35 (talapia)
Fried Rice RM6/portion
Fried rice in Nong & Jimmy is prepared per head. Portion is big. Our fried rice for 10pax arrived as it for 20pax. #Jawdrop. Suggest to order wisely. Hoping to have a plate of stir-fried noodles too? Sorry to tell that you will be disappointed. No noodles here.
If you were observant enough, you will spot a platter of deep fried fritters that look like mini “you tiao” or “yao zhar kwai” at almost every table, served with a portion of creamy sweet pandan kaya. It is not belong to Nong & Jimmy, but a small stall adjacent to the restaurant’s kitchen. Worth order for sharing while waiting for your seafood feast. Isn’t exceptionally good, but addictive for its crispy, doughy texture.
