Auntie Lora Kopitiam 好好吃咖啡店 prides herself for serving authentic Penang Hawker fares in Taman Segar, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. Many claims that this kopitiam serves one of the best prawn mee (Hokkien Mee) in town, even the shop’s tagline highlights so.
Established since 1981, Auntie Lora Kopitiam began as a small stall, expanding into proper shop in 2008. Prawn Mee, Assam Laksa, Lam Mee, Penang Curry Mee, Koay Teow Th’ng, Penang White Coffee, Toasted Bread, Half Boiled Egg take the limelight. Other choices such as Dry Curry Mee, Pork Meat Balls, Dry Lam Mee, Dry Koay Teow, etc. are available too.
Auntie Lora Kopitiam opens as early as 6.30am through 5.00pm ( till 8.00pm for Friday), and is especially busy with hungry folks throng there for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We were there 10.30am one weekend, and both indoor, outdoor was fully occupied. Waited for 10 minutes to get a table, and another 30 minutes for our delicious bowl of prawn mee and curry mee to reach.
Prawn Mee RM6.00
The must-have and best seller in Auntie Lora’s Kopitiam. While many Hokkien Mee, or generally known as Prawn Mee in KL are dominated with spiciness, Auntie Lora’s version allows you to savour umami sweetness of prawn in their broth. Spiciness is very subtle, reaching only very mild level even afer adding spoonful of red hot chili paste.
We felt that they are rather skimp on the toppings, reducing everything to very minimal. Broth seems dilluted, we expected deeper flavour of prawn sweetness.
Penang Curry Mee RM6.00
To us, curry mee or curry laksa we come across in Kuala Lumpur appear in many forms. For broth, some are thin while some are rich and thick. For toppings, it can go fancy from Char Siew to deep-fried wantan, shredded chicken, beancurd, pig skin, eggplant, prawns, siu yoke, and the list continues.
Auntie Lora Kopitiam serves their curry mee in very classic Penang style- creamy, coconuty broth in pale spiciness, topped over with cockles, long beans, bean sprouts, tau pok, pig’s blood jelly and cuttlefish.
Curry Chicken RM5.50
Curry chicken is good, but rather pricey. We only managed to dig up two small pieces of chicken and few cubes of potato within a bed of fiery hot, flavourful gravy. Despite so, we love the curry, almost wanted to order another serving of dry noodle to douse with.
Toasted Bread RM2.50
The bread wasn’t memorable at all, you can skip that in your visit to Auntie Lora Kopitiam unless you really craving on one. The bread was either not fresh, or over toasted. Very dry entirely, not even a trace of fluffiness. For filling, better if they can slather thicker layer of kaya and butter within.
Overall, Auntie Lora Kopitiam noodles keeps the classic Penang flavours. Asking if it is the best, we still doubt that. Decent? Perhaps yes currently, till we found better ones. So in the meantime, you can hop over to Cheras Auntie Lora if you miss Penang delicacies.
