Dining in mid-range to high-end Japanese restaurants with exquisite dining can be truly enjoyable, but at the same time putting a strain on our budget. We admit that we can’t afford Japanese fine dine frequently, but this doesn’t mean that we have to stay away from it. Instead, we constantly check out for more affordable, yet equally satisfying Japanese food to fill our craving.
Japanese sushi from only RM1.80 per plate
We recently came across a Japanese restaurant humbly located within the neighbourhood of SS14, named Sushi Zens. They churn out sushi on conveyor belt, with price starting from only RM1.80, then RM2.80 and RM3.80 respectively. With over 50 types of sushi to choose from in total, we definitely get spoilt with choices every time we were here.
RM1.80 sushi/plate
For RM1.80 sushi, tamgo, inari, tuna mayo and kani zen are always our must-have. You can also order for corn mayo, ebiko, black ebico, crabmeat mayo, avocado, kanimayo, tamago maki, kani maki, cheese maki, sakura maki which are all under the same price tag.
RM2.80 sushi/plate
Moving to RM2.80, continues to stack up your sushi plates with more than 20 types of selections. RM2.80 is also our favourite price range, because they are few salmon sushi to pick from, including Salmon Mango, Salmon Hana Ebiko, Salmon Hana Tuna, Salmon Hana Mayo!
Other than that, try out Inari Kanimayo, Idako, Tobiko, Avocado Tobiko, inari Ebiko, Inari Tuna, Shiro Maguro, Ebi Tempura, Ebi cheese, just to name a few.
RM3.80 sushi/plate
Sushi on black plates put together unagi maki, ebi maki, chuka hotate, smoked duck, salmon cheese, hanasaki kani mayo, hanasaki, hotate, unagi cheese and shishamo maki for more premium bites, but is very affordable at just RM3.80 per plate. Price could have doubled, or tripled up when order in many mid-range Japanese restaurants. Hence it is really worth tucking into a serving or two of these.
Soft Shell Crab Maki RM13.80
Other than sushi, Sushi Zens also covers a promising list of ala-carte menu. Considered full-fledge, as it ranges from appetizers, sashimi, maki rolls, salads, grilled, deep fried items great for sharing to dons, noodles and Japanese set for more filling meal.
Avocado Mango RM12.80
Ordering is simple. Just take the order sheet placed on your table, write down the food number as stated on menu, then pass to staffs. If sushi you want wasn’t on the conveyor belt, you can also add in to the order sheet.
Salmon Mango Maki RM12.80
Recommend this Salmon Mano Maki rolls that holds a balance between sweet and savoury, blending in sweetness of mango that helps to amplify the flavours of sashimi, freshness of daikon and cucumber, along with subtle saltiness of soy sauce that clocks in just right.
Soft Shell Crab RM16.80
Take Sashimi RM15.80
Indulge into 3 types of sashimi in one go at only RM15.80! Salmon, shiro maguro and tako.
Sapporo Ramen
Comfort food that is hard to go wrong with. Thin, springy noodles immersed in tummy warming soup, topped with scallops, mushrooms, soft boiled egg and lastly, bean sprouts that adds sweetness and crunch.
Salmon Skin Mayo RM5.80
Salmon Skin Mayo is especially lovely. Though mentioned “skin”, we were given salmon skin with a little meat attached to it. Juicy bite with plus some fat content, beautifully locked within crunchy outer layer laced with subtle saltiness. So addictive. Eat on its own without any sauces needed. Real good stuff that you shouldn’t miss out when in Sushi Zens.
Saba Teriyaki Shioyaki RM11.80
Next up, Saba Teriyaki Shioyaki is equally delicious. Love how the moist, flavourful flesh marriage just nice with slightly charred, crispy skin – giving pleasing texture contrast.
Salmon Head RM10.80
Grilled Cuttlefish RM17.80
Nice chew, but not rubbery. Glazed with salty-sweet sauce that helps to flavour up the entire dish.
Ebi curry Udon RM13.80
Japanese curry, udon and seafood – Summergirl’s favourites all in. Springy noodles dressed in thick, flavourful gravy, topped with two breaded, deep fried to golden brown prawns. Curry in Sushi Zens is very subtle in spiciness, with bigger focus on “starchy-potato” like richness. So no worries even if you can’t take spicy food. You can easily handle this version.
Unagi Don RM19.80
For the price we pay for, we actually didn’t expect much on our Unagi Don initially. Quite surprised when we were served with such a hearty serving of unagi rice bowl. Generous slices of unagi, grilled and basting with sticky, sweet soy sauce.
We are yet to check out more dishes on Sushi Zens menu but for those we have tried, we strongly recommend Saba Teriyaki Shioyaki, Salmon Skin Mayo and Unagi Don. Besides SS14 Subang, they also have outlets in Kota Kemuning Shah Alam and BUkit Tinggi Klang, coming soon in Bandar Puteri Puchong.
