Vietnamese food and Chinese delights, if you loved both but can’t decide which one to have when reaching lunch and dinner hours, visit Wonton & Pho at Happy Garden, Petaling Jaya. This newly opened restaurant serves the best of both world, great in taste, reasonable in price.
Wonton – morsel of Chinese dumpling, usually wrapped with minced meat or prawns. Pho- a type of popular street food in Vietnam, similar to our soup noodles. Put these two popular street food name together as the shop name, it is not too hard to guess what Wonton & Pho has on their menu.
Goi Cuon (Vietnamese Spring Roll RM7.80), Cha Gio (Deep Fried Spring Roll, RM7.80)
Goi Cuon (Vietnamese Spring Roll), Pho Bo (Vietnamese Beef Noodles), Pho Ga (Vietnamese Chicken Soup Noodles), Cha Gio (Vietnamese Deep Fried Spring Roll), Bun Bo Hue (Spicy Vietnamese Noodle Soup), Bun Cha Gio (Pork Noodle Salad) and more – expect Vietnamese food here to be authentic, as they are churned out by chef hails from Vietnam.
Wanton Soup Noodle RM8.90 (small)/RM9.90 (Medium)/ RM10.90 (Large)
For Chinese delight, the kitchen is headed by the former chef cum owner of famous Soo Kee Wantan Mee in Puchong. If you’ve been to Kinrara Puchong for this stall opens only at night, with queue started even before the business hours, rejoice, as the spirit of this delicious bowl of wantan mee is continued at Wonton & Pho.
Char Siew Wonton Mee RM8.90 (small)/RM9.90 (Medium)/ RM10.90 (Large)
Our dinner started great with Dry Char Siew Wonton Noodles. Thin, springy egg noodles lightly coated with specially concocted sauce. Not oily, with light sweetness that gets nod of approval from Summerkid, who are very particular on “wonton mee sauce”.
BBQ Char Siew RM8.00 (Small), RM15.00 (Large)
An order of BBQ Pork Char Siew is a must here. Balanced lean and fat meat, shielded by caramalized outer layer, a little charred at edges. Surprisingly not too bad, and we were told that chef, aka Mr. Soo, prepared these roasted meat daily, in-house.
We enjoyed the big wonton generously filled with minced meat, easily bigger than most wonton we had from food court. Noodle soup is standard, personally prefer the dry version more.
Hometown Curry Chicken RM15.00
Hometown Curry Chicken – highly recommended. Rich, aromatic curry sauce, mild in spiciness, perfect to go with even just wonton mee kosong. If you wanted to have it with rice, just ask the staff. They have white rice off menu. Diners can also opt for Chicken Feet Wonton Noodle, Dry Curry Chicken Wonton Noodle, and have Char Siew, Kampung Chicken, Pork Meat Ball, Deep Fried Wonton, Wonton Soup as side dishes.
Pho Bo (Vietnamese Beef Noodle) RM12.90
Next, we had Vietnamese selections rocking the dinner table. Pho Bo – Hor Fun like flat noodles immersed in a bed of soothing soup base, topped with beef slices, meat ball, spices, fresh bean sprouts, lime, cilantro and basil leaves. The portion is huge at the price of RM12.90.
Bun Cha Gio RM11.90
Bun Cha Gio is Summergirl’s favourite. Vermicelli, mint leaves, basil leaves, minced pork, crushed peanuts, deep fried spring roll, all in one bowl. Dry base but served with fish sauce – the key ingredient that gives moist to this salad-like noodles, instantly level up the overall flavours.
Egg Custard RM5.50, Homemade Yogurt RM5.50, Cafe Phin RM7.90
French colonialism has strongly impacted Vietnam culture, architecture and culinary. Some of their staple food with French influence is still widely seen till today. The most familiar will be banh mi – mini baguette that is usually stuffed with plenty of pickled carrots, cilantro, pate, pork slices. Besides this, coffee, egg custard, yogurt are also part of them.
We’re glad to be able to have these in Wonton & Pho, and have to say that their homemade yogurt is really good!
Check them out when you are nearby, or around OUG. Their wonton, charsiew and pho are not bad!
