The Toast Co. Cafe at The Grocer’s Inn, Jalan Sultan Kuala Lumpur (Next to Petaling Street) has taken over the former location of The Front Door. Glad that changes to the interior is minimal, as we have always love the charming vintage, back-to-olden-days ambience of this century’s old building. The more obvious change would probably be the colourful painting at the shop front that adds lively touch to the cafe.
Open faced toast is the main highlight on The Toast Co. menu, but not much shadow of The Front Door’s ever popular open faced sandwich. The team has curated a brand new series for their sandwich menu. Serving is bigger, more generous on the toppings, and sided with salad & wedges.
They are 9 open faced sandwich on The Toast Co. menu – 5 for the meat, 2 for the vegetarian, and 2 for the sweet. Plenty of ingredients for each flavours to sum up to flavourful, appealing looking sandwich. We sampled 4 savoury toast – Toast 2, 3, 5 and 7 during our visit for brunch last Sunday.
Toast 2 – Grilled Chicken Breast, Basil Pesto, Parmesan Cheese, Sun Dried Tomatoes RM16
Toast 3- Pulled Beef, Beef Bacon, Caramelized Onion, Mozarella & Cheddar Cheese RM22
Among all, Toast 3 is our favourite. Crispy toast with chewy center, heaped with pulled beef, beef bacon, caramelized onion, mozarella cheese and cheddar cheeese. The caramelized onion comes in just right to add pleasing sweetness to the entire toppings, balanced up the savoury taste delivered by beef and cheese.
Toast 5 – Smoked Duck, Sauteed Mushrooms, Homemade Cheese Sauce RM20
Toast 7- Sauteed Mushrooms with Cream & Thyme, Chives, Olive Oli Drizzle
Toast 2 is towards “clean eats” option by putting together grilled chicken breast with basil pesto, light parmesan cheese garnishing and further flavoured up with sun dried tomato. Toast 2 is another top pick of ours. Packed with flavours thanks to smoked duck and homemade cheese sauce, with juicy bites from sauteed mushrooms.
Toast 8 – Peanut Butter, Nutella, Marshmallow, Chocolate Drizzle RM15
The two dessert toasts may not be as photogenic as the savoury but hey, don’t judge! Both of them tasted so good! We especially enjoyed the crispy toast spread with Nutella sauce and chunky peanut butter, topped with baby marshmallow and chocolate drizzles. So sinful but so delicious we ain’t going to take just one bite, but the whole, or maybe order another helping!
Toast 9 – Berry Coulis, Homemade Sugary Spread, Fresh Berries, Honey RM14
If you felt that Toast 8 will leave you with guilt and prefer healthier toast, go for Toast 9 which is equally good. Toasted bread with homemade sugary spread and berry coulis, finished with honey and fresh berries. Fruity and refreshing, Summergirl’s favourite.
Peanut Butter Banana Cake RM12
Besides open faced toast, the cafe also covers food like Pesto Pasta, Beef Bacon Carbonara, Aglio Olio Chicken/Beef and Chicken Chop. All reasonably priced within RM20. Cakes here are also worth-mentioned, much better than we expected especially Peanut Butter Banana Cake. It is so moist, thickly layered with peanut butter within the sponge. Another hard to resist dessert.
Other choices include Salted Caramel Cake RM12, Oreo Cheesecake RM12, Chocolate Truffle Cake RM12, Homemade Carrot Walnut Cake RM12, Homemade Orange Cake RM8.
Cappuccino RM10
For beverage, sip on Harvey & Sons Tea, fruit teas, freshly squeezed juices, chocolate drink or coffee. The Toast Co. recommends their iced chocolate and mocha.
