Kakigori Cafe at Taman Paramount, Petaling Jaya (same row as Awesome Canteen) is expected to start the Japanese shaved ice wave in town, while cooling down the heat of all-time-summer Malaysia with these soon-to-be-super-popular icy cold dessert.
Run by the team behind Thirdwave, Kakigori Cafe proves to be a successful, new milestone for these coffee enthusiasts. Coffee, tea or their famous 63 degree egg are kept aside, but a whole new concept of taking Japanese sweet treat into limelight in a charming ambience.
The front section of Kakigori appears like a normal cafe that highlights minimalism, while the second part goes more noteworthy in a courtyard design. Uncomplicated layout but photography worthy, plenty of natural light during day time, creating a serene space that showcases strong contrast to the full house scene.
Menu in Kakigori is all about handcrafted Japanese shaved ice, flavoured with premium ingredients and fresh food. No artificial flavouring or colouring, and needless to say, not even concentrated sauce. Everything is about natural taste, indulgence of snowy ice like soft breeze caresses your cheek.
There are currently 10 flavours to choose from, namely Uji Matcha, Apam Balik, Tiramisu, Avocado, Japanese Pumpkin, Guava, Watermelon, Hojicha, Ginger tofu and Shoyu Japanese Shaved. All reasonably price within RM14 to RM17.
We settled down with Uji Matcha, a flavour that well fits the Japanese theme. Kakigori uses ceremony-grade of matcha from Marukyu-Koyamaen from Uji region of Kyoto, Japan. The brand has been producing green tea for over 300 years, and their high quality tea has won them multiple awards including first place in All-Japan competitive Tea Exhibition, The Kansai Competitive Tea Exhibition, and All-Japan Tea Judging Competition.
Hence, an order of Uji Matcha Japanese Shaved Ice in Kakigori will hardly go wrong, especially when you are matcha lovers. Its distinct flavours flows comfortably in the palate from the beginning till the end, flourished with sweetness from red bean and Kinako milk. Warabi mochi is made in house, so good that we wish we could add another few pieces on ala-carte lol.
Kinako milk comes in right in this Uji Matcha ice, balancing up the overall flavours with nutty and toasty taste, plus a little sweetness. Very much akin to peanut butter sauce, but smoother, more delicate.
On a side note, Kakigri goes on self-service. Order and pay at the counter, get your ordering number. When reaches your number, collect your shaved ice from a customized wooden shelves behind the counter, next to area where you get your tissue and water. For first timer, it is fun to trace down from these wooden boxes on where’s your shaved ice. Hahaha. Overall, a lovely cafe to chill at.
