It has been a few years since we last visited V88 Chinatown KL, which was previously named as Vintage 1988 Cafe. The cafe has gone through several upgrade in between, from the interior to food menu, in order to offer better dining experience.
Love the thoughtfully designed interior. Modern vintage look, while keeping the heritage beauty of Petaling Street area. Spacious cafe with seats suitable for both small and large group diners. Communal table, bar counter seats, table by the window or low table with more privacy at the corner of the shop – pick your favourite.
Revisited this place last week, sampling some of the latest items from V88 menu. Extensive selection, from sandwich & toast, big breakfast to pasta, dulang set/rice bowl burgers, snacks and cakes. A good balance of Asian and Western fare, something for everyone. Available from 10AM-10PM. Burgers are signature in V88 Cafe. Meats are carefully marinated with premium ingredients by chef, cooked to order and layered within beetroot bun. The top 3 must-try burger here are Classic Cheese Burger, Ultimate Beef Burger, Hawaiian Chicken Burger.
We had the Ultimate Beef Burger (RM45). Hearty portion, layering together 2x 110gram in-house grind beef patty, melty cheese, crispy beef bacon, lettuce in between fresh, fluffy beetroot bun. Look at the amount of cheese. Generously loaded for ultimate gooey-cheesy goodness.
Had a hard time choosing which snacks to try. Meatballs with Rendang Gravy; Tofupok with Chicken; Chicken Wing coated with Chimichurri Sauce Sauce & Parmesan Cheese; Seafood Fritter with Sweet Sour Sauce; Skin on Fries with Truffle, Parmesan & Siracha Mayo – so eager to try out all. We had the Tofu Pok (RM21) in the end. It is not your usual, plain deep fried tofu pok. Stuffed with chicken & cheese, deep fried to golden brown – crispy at the outside, meaty cheesy on the inside. Awesome with spicy dark sauce serve along.
For pasta, staff recommended Salted Egg Prawn (RM32) and Kaffir Lime Pesto. The latter will always be Summergirl’s choice but we had the Salted Egg Prawn instead, as Summerkid really love salted egg pasta. V88 Chinatown’s version is on the light side, creamy but not cloying. You may like this if you prefer salted egg pasta that is not too rich and thickly coated with lots of sauce.
If you can’t skip rice even for a meal, check out V88 Dulang Set/ Rice. You can have like Asian Buttermilk Chicken, Asam Pedas Red Snapper (RM25), Beef Bulgogi, Tiger Prawn Chiil, Smoked Duck Lemak Chili. Each served with Basmati Rice and Sauteed Seasonal Vegetables. Wanted to have a cake to complete our brunch at V88 Cafe initially but too full in the end. Hence giving it a skip. But if you are dessert person, we recommend you to order Tiramisu. Had it once, so good. It is classic style, housemade with fresh mascarpone, freshly brewed house espresso and cream liquor. Or you can have Yam & Mochi, Orange Moist Chocolate Cake, Strawberry Matcha Shortcake, Onde-onde and Brulee Cheesecake are available.
Service is friendly, and we personally like the opened-kitchen concept, where you get to watch chefs at work. Come by for brunch, dinner, or in between for coffee & cakes when you are in Petaling Street. Pandan Coconut Milk Latte is a must.
