Sunbather Jalan Panggong – Now opened in Chinatown besides Voila Meat-Free Restaurant.
From trendy Bangsar South to heritage-rich Chinatown, Sunbather Coffee has recently brings its uplifting Japanese Yoshoku fare and delicate desserts to the popular downtown of Kuala Lumpur – at the ground floor of a pre-war 4-storey shophouse in Jalan Panggong, near Petaling Street.
It is located right next to Kwai Chai Hong, the back alley that has been successfully restored and transformed into one of the most Instagrammable tourist destinations in Malaysia. Experience the beautiful decoration that transported you back in time to the 60s, followed by Japanese-Western cross-cultural dining at Sunbather Coffee will make your half day trip in Chinatown a fruitful one.
Sunbather Chinatown carries similar interior theme as their first restaurant in Bangsar South, but more spacious, with a lot of thoughtful details and textures on the design. We personally love the Japanese-style seating, so laid-back and relax.
For food, Sunbather Petaling Street offers all-day dining that highlights an extensive selection of Japanese-style Yoshoku classics and modern interpretations, wholesome sando, pasta, Dashi Chazuke, dessert, alongside with Kakigori by Kakiyuki – the Japanese shaved ice specialist in town. What makes the second branch unique is they offer an expanded menu, with some of the items exclusively available only at Sunbather Chinatown. This Sizzling Hambagu (beef, RM36/ chicken, RM32) is one of them. Juicy, meaty beef/chicken hamburg steak served over extra hot iron plate, drizzled with creamy miso fromage sauce. Get your camera ready for that sizzle-licious video!
Comes with grilled vegetables, steamed rice and soup of the day.
Sunbather Signature Yoshoku Breakfast Plate is our favourite section on their menu. Check out from Mr O’s Big Brekkie to Sunbather Big Brekkie, English Breakfast Udon, Teriyaki Chicke Patty Breakfast Plate, Salmon Rice Breakfast Plate. We highly recommend Mr O’s Big Brekkie (RM38), a great switch from the usual Big Breakfast. A colourful platter of Yoshuku Brekkie that put together Hambagu, pumpkin & corn croquette, scramble egg, crunchy ebi fry, Japanese egg tartare sauce, fresh salad greens, potato salad.
Saba Fish Sando (RM28)
Next up, sando, another evergreen savory choice in Sunbather Coffee. Hearty, striking thick and spectacularly layered as usual. We went for the saba fish as the protein this round – and they aren’t stingy with the portion. Really generous filling of saba, with kombu, fresh lettuce sandwiched within housemade shokupan bread. Satisfaction in every bite – sooooo delicious.
Teriyaki King Oyster Mushroom Dashi Chazuke (RM32)
Dashi Chazuke is something worth trying out too. Comforting housemade dashi- a claer soup of anchovy broth, genmaicha, and matcha tea-poured over 180g of steamed Japanese rice with your choice of salted salmon, Teriyaki King Oyster Mushroom, Grilled Unagi topping. Appetizing sesame tofu, lemon imo (Japanese sweet potato), pickled raddish to complete the set.
Premium MD2 Pineapple Kakigori (RM24)
If you are here for the sweet, Sunbather Chinatown menu also features a special series of Malaysian flavours-inspired, tropical Kakiyuki creations – in collaboration with their sister brand Kakigori. So expect to indulge into Japanese shaved ice that showcases Malaysia’s colourful and nutrient-packed bounty of tropical fruits, Fuwa-fuwa (fluffy) shaved ice paired with housemade condiments. This include Starfruit & Passion fruit Kakigori to D24 Chocolate Kakigori, MD2 pineapple Kakigori.
We also tried the Miyuna Parfrait (RM26), recommended by Sunbather Coffee friendly and helpful staff. Earl grey custard pudding, peach sorbet, mixed fruits, chocolate mont blanc, chocolate shard with cacoa nibs. So happy to see warabi mochi in this interesting Fruit Pudding Parfait!
As Sunbather Cafe is always famous for dessert, one trip is never enough to savour all of them. They also have soft serve, madeline, warabimochi, houjicha roll cake, matcha roll cake, Valrhona Chocolate Terrine, Chocolate Matcha lava with matcha ice cream, tiramisu, earl grey custard pudding, coffee jelly with blue pea ice cream, and the list continues.
Beverage wise, we stick to our usual classic cafe order – hot latte and hot matcha. Sunbather uses specailty grade, in -season single origin Arabica beans for their coffee; and premium grade Japanese matcha imported from Japan.
We are looking forward to return for Sunbather Coffee House Special such as Iced Coconut Latte with Pandan Kanten, Osmanthus Latte, Ethiopian Cold Brew with Peach Sorbet, Warabi Matcha Latte, Mango Einspanner, Goma Espresso with Goma Ice Cream Monaka, and Goma Dalgona with Ice Cream, just to name a few.
