A for Arang, Bangsar: Charcoal Grilled Tasting Menu

October 24, 2022 by summerkid_summergirl

Arang Restaurant at Kapas Heights Condominium Bangsar, probably the only restaurant in KL that serves charcoal-grill, organic, gut-healing food. Bali-inspired bebek smoked duck is must-try. Reasonable price, big flavours with lots of thoughts.

A for Arang Bangsar, the latest F&B addition to Kapas Heights Condominium other than the evergreen Kopenhagen Coffee.

As the name implies, Arang takes pride in serving delicacies prepared in back to basic way – charcoal grilled style, only. //p:s: Arang means charcoal in Malay language. What makes this Asian cuisine casual dining restaurant more special is, they highlights on gut healing foods, using organic, locally sourced ingredients. In fact, they place an on-going effort in encouraging healthier eating and living, promoting earth-friendly food free from pesticides and GMOs.

Initially we thought that Arang is a small, homey restaurant but we are wrong. It is rather spacious, with an impressive bar counter, normal indoor seating and plant-filled, lush green outdoor terrece. Thoughtfully designed interior, a mix of modern contemporary with raw & rustic touch.

Chef Liyana is the backbone behind Arang, who is also a former urban deisgner, now a private chef. She was trained in Paris, Tokyo and Melbourne – so get ready to wow your palate with flavours and experiences from these countries. We sampled Arang’s Tasting Menu during our dinner visit few weeks back. Worthwhile, reasonable price menu – as you get to try out some of the signature delights in one go, without having to burn a hole in your pocket.

Started our set menu with Facossia truffle butter and toasted nori peanut. Even though it is a complimentary bite, Arang doesn’t go easy on the effort. The soy nori peanut is twice-toasted, marinated in soy bean and seaweed.

The tasting menu put together two appetizers in sampling size, namely – Corn ribs, truffle kombu butter, topped with shaved parmagiano; and hicken wings marinated in kaffir chili sald, served with housemade sambal belacan.

Next, a hearty portion of smoked duck, urap salad and sambal matah. Bali-inspired dish, which also signifies Chef Liyana’s Javanese heritage. It is so good, do not leave without trying this. Another popular main course on Arang menu is the blue pea flower coconut rice with organic chicken marinated in soy kantan. Already on our list, planning to return and check it out soon.

Smoked grilled tomatoes with ginger dressing.
Despite having a small menu, there’s a lot to discover in Arang’s food. More than just the beautiful aroma from charcoal grill. Each dish is worth savour slowly, with appreciation. From how various ingredients are paired together to sustainability, nutrients pairing, etc..

End our meal sweet with Coconut Yogurt Ice Cream with Lemon Mint Granita.

We personally recommend Arang for any occasion, where you get to enjoy food in a different perspectives, how flavours are elevated in a unique way. Not your usual dinner place, where charcoal, gut-healing, organic, locally-source, fermentation techniques and a lot of thoughts comes together in a dining experience. Recommended.
