Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen Pavilion KL has shifted from Level 6 to Level 4 Connection, next to Pho Vietz Vietnamese Restaurant.
“Tonkatsu is a Japanese dish prepared from “ton” (pork fillet) in a traditional marinade of salt, pepper, flour, egg. It is then coated with a layer of panko or breadcrumbs before deep fried into crispy, golden brown” – at Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen, this is the specialty that they take pride in, since 2010.
Our dining experience at Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen has always been pleasant, from service to food. The new location at Level 4 Connection of Pavilion KL appears to be brighter, more spacious, filled with warm tones of light wood to create soothing, cozy atmosphere.
Okura Mentaiko Ae RM10.50 – Lady fingers with mentaiko garlic soy sauce, garnished with bonito flakes to start.
Hire Katsu Zen (RM36 Zen, RM28 A La Carte) – Breaded pork fillet cutlet served with shredded cabbage, appetizer, pickled vegetables, pork vegetable miso soup and rice and Rosu Katsu Zen (RM34 Zen, RM 26 A La Carte) – Breaded pork loin served with shredded cabbage, appetizer, pickled vegetables, pork vegetable miso soup and rice are the top 2 must-try.
Make it a merrier combination by having Hire Katsu + Ebi Furai Zen (RM43 Zen, RM35 A La Carte) – Breaded pork fillet cutlet and breaded prawn served with shredded cabbage, appetizer, picked vegetables, pork vegetables miso soup and rice.
Golden brown, crispy outer breaded layer, thick cut, juicy meat. Grind some toasted sesame seed, mix with chef’s very own sauce concoction then dip with tonkatsu. Feel that the set portion is way too small judging from the pieces served? Enjoy till the end, it can be very filling as the meat is thick cut, meaty.
If you prefer non-deep fried option, Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen has got you covered. Personally, we recommend Buta Shogayaki Zen (RM33 Zen, RM25 A La Carte), a lovely serving of pan sauteed pork belly with onion and ginger sauce. Heavier in flavours, goes well with rice. They also have Buta Kimuchi Zen, which stir fried with kimchee for that unique kick of sweetness, sourness and spiciness.
Visited Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen few times but this was our first try on this Tonpei Yaki RM26 . It taste sooo good! Freshly made omelette, wrapping in generous, tender slices of pork belly that adds texture and meat sweetness in between. Finished with bonito flakes and drizzles of special sauce. Should have known about this hidden signature earlier. Make it a set with rice, cabbage, miso soup – easily a satisfying, comfort meal.
Oroshi Toriniku Nanban RM28, one of our favourites. Instead of dipping the meat into the sauce, for this, staff suggested us to pour the sauce over the chicken cutlet, allowing the flavours to be absorbed within, together with grated radish as refreshing addition.
Say yes to gyoza, all day err day. Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen doesn’t skimp on their Yaki Gyoza RM18 filling. Tuck in one at a time, just nice. Other than that, Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen menu also offers noodles, donburi, nabemono, takoyaki, salad, dessert, etc., fits right for both light and substantial meal.
Overall, another nice visit and glad to find out some of their other dishes are as good as their tonkatsu. Going to stick to their omelette on future visit. And hope to check out their noodles and nabemono pot too.
