Ramen Bar Shi Shi Do, Gasket Alley PJ here we come! Beat the queue to have one of the best tonkotsu ramen in town after getting our coffee fix at 270sqft cafe not too far away.
Compared to last time, we do not queue as much for food now, be it newly opened hipster cafe, extra popular restaurants with lots of good reviews, etc.. We will either wait for the hype to fade away, go earlier to reduce waiting time or worse, give that place a skip. Hahaha. But we can’t tell how much we miss Japan, that we made an impromptu virgin visit to Ramen Bar Menya Shi Shi Do last week, just to have a bowl of ramen in Japanese-theme dining setting. They have another outlet Menya Shishido in Jaya One, but we love the ambience of this new store more.
As Ramen Bar Menya Shi Shi Do practices No Reservation policy, the only thing you can do is – have more patient and wait for your turn. We reached at 11.50AM on a Tuesday (*restaurant opens at 12noon) and there’s already couple of customers in the queue. The whole shop get fully seated in less than 10minutes after business starts. This made us felt more anticipated, with a thought that ramen here must be very delicious.
Ramen Bar Menya Shi Shi Do menu is quite extensive. Other than ramen, they also offer a variety of appetizers, salad, rice bowls, oden, yakitori, tempura, stir-fried food, hot pot and we even saw ramen burger. Quite a full-fledge menu. For ramen, choose from either pork bone soup, black garlic pork soup, spicy pork soup, curry pork soup, basil pork soup or pepper spicy pork soup. You can also mix for double flavours or triple flavours according to suggested options.
Our standard Ajitama Chasu Ramen, priced at RM24. Springy noodles, rich & flavourful broth, topped with black fungus, egg, pork shoulder slice and spring onion. You can add-on some if your favorite toppings- pork shoulder RM4.50, ajitama RM3.50, spring onion RM2.50, seaweed RM2.50; as well as extra noodles – 1 portion RM4.50, 1/2 portion RM2.50
If you are not into ramen on your visit, Ramen Bar Menya Shi Shi Do has got you covered with more Japanese delights such as oden, cheese curry rice, chicken nanban rice, shogayaki rice, fried garlic chicken rice, yakitori don, beef striploin steak, pork steak, tonkotsu hot pot, steamed clams, chilli prawns, just to name a few. Had an order of Japanese dumpling too. RM8 for 3 pieces. Bigger than the gyoza we usually have, very generous filling too. Nice, but will be better if the crispy side is more prominent.
Summergirl’s order – spicy Shishido Original Tonkotsu Hot Pot. RM21/pax, RM42/2pax. She loved it. Tummy-warming, mildly spicy soup, loaded with pork belly slice, leek, chinese cabbage, enoki mushroom, tofu. Just nice for a small eater, or for those who are looking for no-carb lunch. Stick to ramen or rice dish if you want a substantial meal.
Overall, ramen is good, but not as mind-blowing as said by many. We do love the ambience (that Japanese feel that makes us miss Japan more) and friendly service. Staffs are really attentive, checking with us if everything is ok from time to time despite being busy. Will we come back again? Yes. And FYI, HEJAU, a matcha specialist is now opened at Gasket Alley too. Get your matcha latte & matcha sweet treat craving fixed after slurpy bowl of ramen.
