The Chow Kit Kitchen & Bar at The Chow Kit, an Ormond Hotel – We told ourselves that we will be back again, after trying out their unexpectedly good berries-topped, thick-cut brioche classic French Toast for breakfast during our stay in the hotel. And yes, we did.
Here we are for the second time, checking out their newly launched menu for lunch and dinner. Celebrating multiculturalism of Malay cuisine, dishes on The Chow Kit Kitchen & Bar menu take pride in drawing beautiful flavours from the North and South of Malaysia, crafted using recipes passed down for generations along with chef’s very own creativity. Also, local produce are sourced from both artisanal vendors, and the nearby Chow Kit market.
Food selections aren’t extensive, but everything seems worth trying. Indulge from Bergedil Sumbat to Kerabu Jantung Pisang, Pegaga Salad, Daging Salai Masak Lemak, Ikan Assam Pedas, Botok Botok Ikan, Claypot Curry Fish Head, Signature Chilli Crab, and Kambing Kuzi, just to name a few.
Satay RM25
Started with half dozen of chicken skewer or satay, grilled over charcoal fire. Meaty chunks of meat coated with thin layer of sweetness, slightly charred edges – just the way we like it. Great on its own, equally lovely to go with the mildly spicy, chunky peanut sauce. Available in beef or tofu too.
Sotong Bakar RM65
Had a hard time deciding what to have for main course. Wanted to taste Ayam Kampung Emas, Sambal Udang and Sotong Bakar but, too greedy to have all three. Haha. Finally settle down with Sotong Bakar – grilled fresh squid with turmeric and daun cekur glaze, served with house-made air assam. No regret ordering this. Sooooo delicious.
The sided sauce is the bomb. Packed a punch, spicy, zeasty, appetizing.
The Chow Kit Fish & Chips RM58
Finally get to try out this legendary Fish & Chips, after seeing it for countless time on social media. in The Chow Kit Kitchen & Bar’s very own version of East meets West fish & chips, putting together signature tandoori marinated fish, crispy kale, hand-cut chips and tartar sauce. Still crispy at the outside, moist within though we took quite a while to figure out the best angle to take a picture for this “fish”.
Bubur Chacha Pulut Hitam RM22
End the meal sweet with Summergirl’s favourite Bubur Chacha Pulut Hitam. Probably one of the best, also one of the prettiest bubur chacha we had had. Apart from the rich, creamy black glutinous rice soup, what makes this dessert stands out is the sweet potato jelly with cubes of sweet potato, plus a scoop of coconut sorbet and crispy sweet potato. So much effort in recreating a traditional sweet soup.
Musang King Custard RM28
Musang King Custard, another must-have here. Baked cream custard, loaded with intense flavours of fresh musang king, finished with a torch of caramelized brown sugar. Other dessert you can have in The Chow Kit Kitchen & Bar include Apam Balik RM15 – coconut pancake with sweet corn & peanuts; and Bubur Som Som RM22 – Coconut milk custard served with red beans
& gula melaka.
Satisfying meal! Will definitely return for the third time and get Summerkid’s family to enjoy more dishes together. On a side note, getting a parking here can be difficult. Even though the hotel has a designated carpark for guests, but it isn’t enough for both staying guests and dining guests.
