SiChuan Hotpot has become such an iconic food option in Sunway Velocity that when it comes to “what to eat in Sunway Velocity”, we will always reach for any of the hotpot restaurant that stretches along the mall’s Nanjing Road.
Spotted a new restaurant – Chong Qing Grilled Fish (CQGF Malaysia 重庆烤鱼吉隆坡店) last week and decided to give a skip to our usual bubbling and boiling dinner session. Because it has been a while since we last had Chong Qing Grilled Fish!
Hailed from our neighboring country with a decade of history, Chong Qing Grilled Fish takes pride in signature grilled fish 招牌烤魚 that carries the same name, created from a harmonious cross between charcoal-grilled fish and the ever-popular Sichuan pot hot using more than 20 types of herbs and spices.
There are 8 types of base flavour, namely Spicy Fragrant, Spicy Numbing, Pickled Cabbage, Hot & Sour, Mushroom Herbs, Fermented Black Bean, Fresh Chillies and Chopped Chilli Pepper.
To order, first, choose your choice of fish – Sea Bass, Golden Snapper, Red Tilapia, Temerloh Patin, Silver Pomfret. Then, get your choice of flavours, followed by level of spiciness in either Mild, Medium or Extreme. Price from RM58 for small, RM68 for large.
Add on choice of sides such as Chinese Cabbage, Lotus Toot, Kelp, Fried Potato, Fried Beancurd Skin, Enoki Mushroom, King Oyster Mushroom, Luncheon Meat, Chicken Sausage, Quail Eggs, Fish Ball, White Radish, Handmade Crispy Shredded Pork, Pork Slices and more to make it a complete meal.
We had Spicy Fragrant 一品香辣– Dried Chillies, Peppercorns, Spicy Sauce, Chili Powder and Mushroom Herbs 十裏菌香 – Willow Mushroom, Dried Porcini Mushroom, Fresh Mushroom, Garlic, Green & Red Pepper, Mushroom Spice. Love the former, with spiciness in Medium Level.
Other than Grilled Fish, Chong Qing Grilled Fish menu also covers a great varieties of SiChuan delicacies. From starter like Sliced Pork Belly with Spicy Garlic Sauce, Black Wood Ear Fungus Salad, Century Egg with Green Chili to sharing dishes including Salted Egg Chicken Cubes, Oyster Omelette, Braised Pork Knuckles, Hot Plate Mutton with Cumin and Fried Egg with Tomato, just to name a few. Worth visiting in large group so that you can try more of their dishes.
Hand Shredded Cabbage 手撕包菜 RM18
We initially thought that this delicacy is just nothing more than another stir-fried vegetables. We are totally wrong. It is soooooooo good! Pork slices, dried chillies, Chinese cabbage and fried garlic, stir-fried till full of wok hei, charred goodness – the winning point! Highly recommended.
Lijiang Fragrant Spicy Fried Rice with Shredded Pork 麗江香辣炒飯 RM16
First time trying Lijiang Fried Rice and Summerkid gives a double thumbs up to this! Wok hei loaded, with plenty of flavours from Yunnan preserved vegetables, shredded pork, eggs, spring onions. Generous portion, suggest to share between two for small eaters.
Spicy Chicken Cubes 重慶辣子雞 RM30
Another favourite of ours. Lots of dried chillies, dried peppercorn, white sesame, peanuts and special spicy sauce stir fried with chunks of chicken meat. You might thought that it is overly heaped with dried chilies but they are definitely not skimp of the amount of chicken! Find them! Love the spicy kick, a little tongue-numbing too!
Salted Egg Fish Skin 鹹蛋魚皮 RM24
Other than everybody-loves-Salted-Egg-Fish Skin, Chong Qing Grilled Fish also expand their repertoire of salted egg to more addictive dish – Salted Egg Calamari, Salted Egg Cheese Tofu, Salted Egg Chicken Cubes, Salted Egg Fish Skin, Salted Egg Fried Mantou, Salted Egg Corn and Beancurd with Salted Eggs & Prawns! Do try their Salted Egg Fish Skin! Best to go with a pint of beer.
Salted Egg Calamari with Thai Herbs RM28
2Litre Fresh Fruit with Jasmine Tea Tower RM36
Quench our thirst with this refreshing Fresh Fruit with Jasmine Tea! A tower of 2 Litre!
Personally, we had a great experience in Chong Qing Grilled Fish. It is located at the corner with less foot traffic, but definitely worth the extra walk as their food is quite good, with reasonable price. Our must-try: Lijiang Fried Rice, Salted Egg Fish Skin and Hand Shredded Cabbage.
