Vegetable doesn’t get any fresher than harvesting from your very own edible garden. Be a city farmer, enjoy the fun of cooking with what you grow today!
As we get so busy with our daily lives, spending long hours in the office, get trapped in heavy traffic jam, we tend to have less focus on work-life balance, not to mention having healthier eating habits.
You too, probably always wanted to enjoy healthier meals but the question is, how far can we get control over freshness and quality of the food we consume, especially when we are eating outside so often? Organic food restaurants could be one of the ideal options but it doesn’t come cheap, not something we can afford on daily basis.
Talked about this topic over a coffee conversation with our friends few weeks ago, and she began to introduce us to her edible garden, proudly built right at her home backyard.
She told us that she used to have the same problem as us whereby, she wanted to know what goes into her food. How the vegetables are grown, how much pesticides are used, are there artificial preservatives used to keep the vegetables fresh after harvested? Other than this, transportation, temperature and handling in between, these factors are likely to affect the quality of your products.
She decided to have her very own mini urban farm.
She plants different vegetables, from sweet potatoes leaves to bitter gourd, winter melon, egg plants, spring onions, Taiwanese Yun Er greens, mint leaves, curry leaves, birdseye chili, basil and more.
“Don’t limit by space. You do not need a 100 arches land to be able to grow your own vegetables. You can start growing plants like spinach and lady’s fingers even from just a flower pot.” She said.
It takes some time, patients and care but by the time you get to harvest these vegetables, the satisfaction of being able to cook what you grow is priceless. Seeing them growing is an enjoyable process too!
Asking how she deals with vegetable garden pests, she said she uses homemade enzyme solution. Chemical agents? Never. Just all natural.
In addition, this city-based-agriculture is definitely a more economical way of getting vegetables. Cost savings, cheaper than buying from markets.
When you have more extra vegetables, you can share with friends and families.
She then invited us for a simple dinner, using vegetables freshly plucked from her farm.

We all know a thing or two about home-grown vegetables and artificial-free fresh produce, so why not turn it real by really practicing it at home? We too, have started, can’t wait to see our fully-grown leafy!
