At Don’s Warong Plaza Damas, it is all about indulgence in favourites from the South of Peninsular Malaysia, along with other local delicacies and Western delights. In case you have a sudden craving for Mee Rebus Johore, Nasi Lemak Kukus Johor, Laksa Johor and so forth, Don’s Warong is where you should check out in Hartamas area.
Mee Rebus Johor RM14.30
Visited this humble restaurant for dinner few weeks back with a bunch of friends, sampling few signatures recommended by friendly staffs. Mee Rebus Johor to start, one of the best sellers you shouldn’t leave without trying. Yellow noodles, dressed in a bed of thick, creamy gravy in sweet and subtle spicy concoction. Halved hard boiled eggs, bean sprouts, tauhu, meat slices, crushed crackers, fried shallots complete the topping, generously.
Tauhu Telur Special RM9.50
Tauhu Telur Special that reminds us about Tauhu Bakar, but is actually a popular traditional street food in Indonesia. A mixture of tofu and egg, deep fried to golden brown to get a fluffy omelette at the outer layer, soft chewiness of tofu within. Topped with shredded carrots, cucumbers and bean sprout for refreshing crunch, also to balance up the greasiness. Meatless, yet protein packed.
Cucur Udang Special RM7.50
Continue to feast up with more guilty pleasure snacks from Don’s Warong menu – Cucur Udang Special! Prawns, cabbage, carrots, onions, garlic mixed into flour batter, then deep fried. Thin crispiness at the outside, moist inside with juiciness from various ingredients. The worth-mentioned part is definitely the dipping sauce. Not just random store bought chilli sauce, but homemade version, painstakingly prepared using Mak Li’s recipe. Loud applause deserved for the effort even on little things.
Nasi Lemak Kukus Johor with Ayam Berempah RM13.50
Nasi Lemak Kukus Johor, Summerkid’s favourite. Ayam berempah may be slightly dry on the outer side, but to us, it is the most addictive part because this is where all the herbs & spices marination locked in.
Accompanying the aromatic rice are saute vegetables, hard boiled egg, crunchy ikan bilis, cracker, cucumber, peanuts and sambal. If you love sambal on the sweet side, Don’s Warong’s Nasi Lemak is for you. Pleasing sweetness, very mild spiciness but doesn’t fall short on flavours. Pretty decent overall.
Sup Tulang DW RM17, with Rice RM18.50
Heart warming dish, soup that sooth the soul. Hours of simmering, releasing essence of beef bones and meat into soup, taste heighten up with spices. Cooked together with potatoes, carrots and cabbage. Have it with fried garlic and spicy sambal kicap cili padi served aside for extra boost of flavours.
The Adventures, The Don RM21.90
Meanwhile, burgers and chicken chop to fill our Western food cravings. The Beef Burger with 1/ 4 pound beef patty; The Cheese Burger with melted cheese; The Don with extra beef bacon slices, fried egg and quarter pound beef patty; all seem so delicious by just looking at the description that reveals “what are sandwiched within grilled buttered bun”.
Don Chop RM25
For Chicken Chop, selections limited to just three options including Hainanese Chicken Chop, Black Pepper Chicken Chop and Don Chop, but enough to keep us satisfy with tender, juicy meat seared under the crispy golden layer, which is the Don Chop we had. Served with a side of carrot, green peas, fries and egg.
Ice Creamery RM10
Ended the meal in a sweet way by sharing an Ice Creamery from the Classic Waffles section. Simple dessert, topping vanilla ice cream over freshly made waffle, drizzled with homemade chocolate sauce and roasted crushed nuts. Other interesting dessert choices you may opt for are Ais Kachang Johor with Chocolate Sauce (RM9.50), Homemade Brownie (RM12.90) and Choc-A-Nut (RM7).
