This Chinese New Year, step into the splendour of Pak Loh Chiu Chow Restaurant at Feast Village, Starhill Gallery Bukit Bintang Kuala Lumpur for an array of authentic Teochew-style Chinese cuisine, poises to elevate your Chinese New Year dining experience in a different way.
Talented Executive Chinese Chef Alex Au, who hails from Hong Kong Pak Loh Chiu Chow and arms with decades of culinary experience, together with his team have crafted two special Chinese New Year menu, featuring dishes ideal for 4 persons, 6 persons and 10 persons dining.
Braised Sea Abalone with Broccoli 鮑您發財美鮑燴西蘭花
The two set of Chinese New Year menu, namely Four Season Fortune Set Menu四季好景宴, starts from RM398; while for Four Season Golden Jade Prosperity Set 金玉滿堂宴, the price is from RM788. We sampled the Four Season Fortune Set Menu and have to say that, it is one of the highly recommended CNY set to try out in 2018.
Rainbow Prosperity Yee Sang with Salmon Trout風生水起三文魚撈生
To be honest, we didn’t put much expectation to this Yee Sang initially. Our tasting session for restaurants’ CNY Menu 2018 had almost coming to an end when we visited Pak Loh Qiu Chow. Having tasted quite a number of Yee Sang which was similar to one another, we thought that Pak Loh Qiu Chow’s version would be almost the same too. To our surprised, it turned out to be a different take, one of the best on both presentation and taste!
Served over a tray of dry ice with dreamy fogs, this Yee Sang is dramatic, photogenic right from the first sight. But of course, the bigger attention goes to the Yee Sang ingredients, and concoction. Most ingredients are freshly prepared, where, according to Chef Alex, freshness is highly concerned when comes to cooking Qiu Chow dishes.
Julienne cucumber, sengkuang, carrot, crullers, fried garlic, crushed peanuts, starfruit, chilli, ginger, cilantro sum up to myriad of colours and textures, flavours heighten with chef special sauce – sashimi sauce and plum sauce infused with “gam gat” oil.
We were told that this sashimi sauce is inspired from the dipping sauce used by Qiu Chow people when eating sashimi raw fish. Just the thousand miles that Chef Alex travelled to Chiu Chow to discover this amazing sauce made the whole Yee Sang whole lot more noteworthy.
Double-boiled Top Shell Soup with Cordyceps Flower 新年好運蟲草花燉美國向螺
Next up, a bowl of pipping hot Double-boiled Top Shell Soup with Cordyceps Flower. So tummy warming and nourishing that even Summergirl who rarely finishes her soup polished clean the whole bowl in a jiffy. Not to forget the top shell that gave us some jaw exercise in between soothing sip.
Classic Steamed Red Snapper with Bean Sauce年年慶有餘荳醬蒸紅鮪魚
Seafood is a must for Qiu Chow during Chinese New Year. Hence there goes the CNY menu for Pak Loh Chiu Chow, highlighting whole steamed red snapper fish topped with liberal amount of bean sauce. Instead of topping only pre-ready bean sauce sourced from Qiu Chow, Chef Alex adds more kicks to it by stir-fried the bean sauce together with garlic and ginger.
Baked Prawns with Salad Sauce 哈哈大笑莎拉汁焗明蝦球
Baked Prawns with Salad Sauce – expect this to be the favourite of young and old. Bouncy prawns encased within thin crispy outer layer, drizzled with two types of sauce – mayo sauce for creaminess, and peach sauce to reach for sweet, fruity finish.
Golden Crispy Chicken with Lemon Sauce 金雞報喜檸汁脆皮吊燒雞
Summerkid’s favourite. Crispy skin, tender meat, along with zezty, refreshing lemon sauce to keep the whole dish more well- balanced in flavour.
Stir-fried Mixed Waxed Meat Rice with Pumpkin 金銀滿屋香港臘味南瓜炒飯
Taking a switch from usual Claypot Lap Mei Fan, Chef Alex incorporated one of the Chinese New Year favourites – smoky waxed meat to beautifully flavoured up his fried rice. Pumpkin cubes is a surprise ingredient we found within, giving not only natural sweetness, but also a symbolism of wealth thanks to its golden colour.
Golden Crispy Chinese Glutinous Cake 酥炸年糕
Double-boiled Lotus Seeds and Lily Bulbs with Black Glutinous Rice 蓮子百合紫米露
End the meal sweet with Golden Crispy Chinese Glutinous Cake and Double-boiled Lotus Seeds and Lily Bulbs with Black Glutinous Rice. Something simple but Pak Loh Chiu Chow had it curated nicely, especially the glutinous rice cakes with nicely caramelized edges that forms into really delectable bites.
Overall, we felt so glad to be able to try out such a lovely Chinese New Year Set menu that adheres to authentic Qiu Chow cooking, along with a touch of modern creativity from chef. If you are looking for affordable and delicious CNY menu for less than 10 persons, we highly recommended Pak Loh Chiu Chow Starhill Gallery KL.
