As dessert cafe scene in Kuala Lumpur is getting more competitive, we personally feel that it is important for bakers to stay true to passion and expertise, churning out sweet treat with love instead of just business focus. At least, this is what we see in Butterfly Cafe, a lovely dessert shop we stumbled upon when doing medicine grocery in Sri Petaling few weeks back.
Ms. Lai Leng, the founder of Butterfly Dessert Cafe started her baking journey through self-learning, along with plenty of research, countless try and error to understand the chemistry behind different ingredients for continuous improvement. It has finally come to a point that she decided to grow her passion into new milestone, sharing what she loves with whoever that enjoy dessert as much as she do. Like..us! LOL.
Located on the first floor along a quieter street in Sri Petaling, above a Si Chuan Steamboat & Grilled Fish Restaurant 鱼来鱼往巴蜀特色烤魚, Butterfly Cafe is not difficult to spot. All thanks to its baby pink signboard with shop name adorned by modern calligraphy wording.
Spacious space, wooden floorings, white walls contrasted by furnishing in darker shades, vintage-style chandelier and pastel colour flowers for dreamy finish. Nothing too complicated on the design, hence we keep our anticipation on beautiful dessert indulgence.
Earl Grey Cheesecake on daquoise with Tea Gelee, Blueberry Coulis, Orange Mint Sorbet RM22
Butterfly Cafe menu doesn’t carry a long list of dessert but rest assured, these specially curated plated sweet delights will be a feast to the eyes and tummy. Price may be a little high but worth the amount you pay for, because they are serving fine plated dessert that are laborious to prepare, not ready-to-serve-at-anytime cakes from dessert counters.
We sampled three desserts, namely Chocolate Banana, Orange Mango Triffle and Earl Grey Cheesecake on daquoise with Tea Gelee, Blueberry Coulis and Orange Mint Sorbet. Other options you can check out including Lemon Cheese with Walnut Crumbs & Meringue, Coconut Passion Fruit and Deconstructed Strawberry Opera.
Chocolate Banana RM25
Of all, we enjoyed Chocolate Banana the most. Its name may remind you about chocolate sponge cake layered with banana but in Butterfly Cafe, it is whole lot different in taste and appearance. Dome shape crispy chocolate outer layer, with banana, caramel chococlate chantilly and dark chocolate ganache beautifully filled underneath it. Like how the sweetness of banana pairing well to the bitterness of chocolate.
Orange Mango Tri RM25
Orange Mango Trifle, the best seller in Butterfly Cafe. Orange and mango mousse interlayering each other, sectioned with sweet fresh mangoes, topped with chocolate coated strawberry and meringue biscuit. Delicately smooth, creamy and rich mousse, ideal to be shared among 2 to 3 friends. We find it goes well with Earl Grey Tea, as it helps to balance up the richness just right.
For beverage, enjoy classic coffee selections in white and black, mocha, matcha latte, chocolate, tea by pot, lemonade soda, passion fruit soda and the more interesting- Houjicha Latte, available in Hot (RM12) and Iced (RM13).
Butterfly Cafe is planning to come up with high-tea set in near future. So stay tune to their Facebook and get ready for your “tai tai hi-tea” that is affordable, no compromise in good quality. Check them out when you are around this area.
