Zao Seksyen 19, Petaling Jaya – a breakfast cafe with a lovely list of sandwich menu. Grab one before going to office, or have it during weekend brunch to power up your day.
The word “Zao” 早 means good morning in Chinese. Being an eatery shop named so, it is clear that Zao will not go far from being a cafe focuses on the most important meal of the day – breakfast. Sandwich is something they prides at. In fact, 95% of the selections on Zao menu is sandwich. Be it a classic sandwich with ingredients stuffed within breads, or open-faced sandwich with “exposed fillings”, give it a try.
Zao opens as early as 6AM during weekdays and 8AM during weekends. Make it a stop for grab-and-go sandwich with a bottle of cold press juice or hot coffee on weekdays morning to keep you fuel up. And on weekends, as a quaint little cafe to chill for leisure brunch, gathering with friends.
We’ve already wanted to visit Zao since few weeks back, because Summergirl can get really noisy whenever she read something about “this cafe serves pretty good sandwich”, “there’s new sandwich shop opened in town”. Sort of. Bread stuff trigger her appetite. LOL. Has to bring her there to keep her quiet hahaha. Finally in Zao Cafe last Sunday. We were quite late, around 9.30AM. Glad that it wasn’t fully occupied. Finding parking can be hassle but not as bad as Damansara Uptown, Bangsar or Solaris Mont Kiara area. Just have to drive a little further down for parking. Not really a big problem though.
Zao is located next to Moon Kee Section 19, a restaurant famous for their fish head noodles. No conflict but both are comfort food that we love. lol. Zao has a space with minimalism design, white and light wooden colour theme, completed with green potted plants and furniture from famous home furnishing store.
Straight forward menu – sandwiches, big plated and drinks. Spring Onion Egg & Cheese Slices, Egg and Baked Pumpkin, Eggy Hashbrown & Nacho Cheese, Sunny Side Up & Bacon, Virgina Ham & Scrambled Egg, Mashed Avocado & Sunny Side Up, Nut Butter Bacon & Grilled Pumpkin, Spinach Slice Pork & Slice Cheese, Grilled Rich Mozzarella on the Sandwiches side, price from RM9-RM14…
…and then Zao’s Big Breakfast Platter, Awake Big Breakfast, Sexy Grilling, Korean Kimchi Porky, Mashed Avocado Pea Porky, Cheeezy Porky Grill Pineapple for Big Plated choices. Price within RM26. We tried out Sexy Grilling, and have to say that their Big Plated lives up to its name. Real big, huge portion.
Two toasted white square bread, piled high with saute mushroom, diced tomato, cucumber, butter lettuce, sunny side up and grilled bacons.
RM18 doesn’t sound cheap in the first thought, but definitely worth the price once you see the hearty serving. Plenty of textures, and we love the colourful presentation that liven up our mood!
Picked Virgina Ham & Scrambled Egg for sandwich. Yes, is 三文治 so three layers of buttered and grilled square bread, brimming with butter lettuce, ham, egg, tomato and mayo spread within each layer. We enjoy the slightly crispy outer layer laced with aroma of butter, must eat while it is hot. Else it will turn soggy due to the moist of fresh ingredients. Each sandwich comes with one side dish of the day, which can be macaroni salad, coleslaw, salsa salad, sweet potato and so forth.
Drinks selections here aren’t as fancy as many other cafes, but you can still get your caffeine fixed with Organic Black Coffee in hot or cold; homemade iced lemonade, hot ginger molasses and the more healthy options – 100% cold press juice of the day. We had Orange Pressed Juice at RM11, a combi of orange, carrot, celery… and.. sorry we forget the last ingredient. Hahaha.. filled in long glass bottle. Refreshing, natural sweetness to quench thirst.
Overall review: Total bill came to RM45 for one orange cold press juice, hot organic black coffee, virgina ham & egg sandwich, sexy grilling big plated. Zao serves as a decent sandwich shop option for folks living around PJ area. Their sandwiches flavours are creative. If you stay in KL, check out A.Toast Pudu or Purple Miao Ampang, which are great especially A.Toast cafe.
