Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart in Empire Shopping Gallery, Subang Jaya – another much raved about Japanese cheese tart, opened few days after Tokyo Secret Half Baked Cheese Tart in Ikano Power Center (IPC). As usual, we saw pictures in Facebook, showing long queue on their first day of opening, which somehow symbolizing “the cheese tart is gonna taste good and worth the waiting”.
We visited one week after their opening, and surprised as there was no queue needed. It was a Sunday evening, the mall was quite busy and we expected to have some waits at Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart. There were customers on and off, but generally you can get your cheese tart within 5 minutes.
You don’t even have to wait for the cheese tart to come out from the oven, as trays of freshly baked cheese tarts are already done baking, waiting behind the counter to be sold. Erm…fast but not a good sign though. Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart is having Buy 5 Free 1 promotion, RM29 for 6 pieces. RM5.80 per piece.
We asked for a box but staff said it was only applicable for purchase of half dozen. So we decided to buy just two and they packed them into normal brown colour takeaway paper bag. Not a pleasant first impression in terms of branding, comparing to the charming yellow colour paper bag we received from Tokyo Secret.
It is recommended to enjoy a cheese tart when it is still pipping hot – oozing goodness cheese, flowing out from the crumbly tart. Sadly, Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart version doesn’t score high. For filling, it is towards pale, smooth and soft like an egg tart. We personally like IPC Tokyo Secret Cheese Tart, which has really rich, creamy and gooey filling.
Overall review: Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart may get the winning point for being cheaper in price, RM5.80 per piece, while Tokyo Secret is RM7.90 for one. But speaking about taste, we will go back for Tokyo Secret. For those who love their cheese tart light and mild, perhaps Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart is ideal for you.
