Coco Steamboat needs no further introduction, as the restaurant has been long famous for their pork bone soup steamboat, a flavourful broth that get many diners hands down with. From Coco Steamboat at HQ Cheras to outlets at Old Klang Road and Puchong, this milky, richly flavoured cloudy white steamboat broth is undeniably, the all time best seller.
As much as we know about the restaurant, it stays at only “steamboat” until we discovered a noodle shop named Mak Yong Kee (麥容記). It is actually part of Coco Steamboat Cheras Batu 11, focuses on Hong Kong style dim sum, porridge and wantan noodles during breakfast and lunch. Great location for family dining during daytime.
When we walked into Mak Yong Kee last week, we saw almost each table had at least one bowl of wantan mee, rising our excitement to check it out. The most authentic version is definitely “Sai Yong” wantan mee, a small bowl of soup wantan noodles with surprise hidden beneath.
Scoop up and discovered large, bouncy prawn wantan at the bottom! Exactly the same as how Hong Kong restaurants serve Sai Yong.
Apart from wantan soup noodles, enjoy also “gon lou” wantan mee, aka dry version egg noodles. Thin, springy noodles topped with char siew and a side of wanton soup. We personally love the dry version over the soup version, as the sauce hits the point – fragrant, a touch of sweetness, not too oily.
Just wantan mee? Of course not. We’ve just started. Let the feast began with tempting selections of Hong Kong style dim sum! Char Siew Pau, Steamed Siew Mai, Steamed Pork Ribs, Steamed Fish Balls, Fried Dumpling, Chee Cheong Fun, Pan Fried Raddish Cake, and the list goes on.
Steamed Raddish Cake RM5.00
Of all, Steamed Raddish Cake is our favourite. Creamy soft raddish cake, helmed with aromatic bites from chopped shrimps and condiments. Flavourful, and filling too. Suggest to order for sharing.
Century Egg with Meat Porridge 皮蛋瘦肉粥 RM4.50
Didn’t put much expectation on Mak Yong Kee’s porridge initially but as we slurped on first spoonful, we were surprised with the thick, smooth texture, flavoured up with century egg and minced meat. Highly recommended dish from the menu.
Can’t help but to order a plate of French Toast, as it has been some time we didn’t have this little piece of bread thickly sandwiched with peanut butter jam, coated with a layer of egg and deep fried, then add a cube of butter on top. Greasy, calories loaded but so intrigue. Hmm, eat first.
Other sandwich option includes BBQ Bun, luncheon sandwich, polo bun, ham & cheese sandwich, butter kaya toast. BBQ Bun filled with saucy meat fillings is equally delicious too.
End the meal with Coco Steamboat Mak Yong Kee homemade dessert, putting together 3 traditional Chinese sesame paste, peanut paste and red bean sweet soup to please. Of all 3, sesame sweet soup is our top pick.
