Annie 1 Family Restaurant at Damansara Uptown PJ – We passed by the cafe for so many times but never bother to step in as we thought that it is just another kopitiam that serves up some popular Chinese local food such as chicken rice, curry mee , chee cheong fun and so on to cater breakfast and lunch crowd. Well, we are not completely wrong, in fact, quite close but after checking out few reviews write-up by fellow bloggers, one thing we are incorrect all this while on Annie 1 is : Annie 1 wantan mee is not just any other usual wantan mee, but one of the best Menglembu Wantan Mee in Klang Valley you can look for.
Finally gave them a try last weekend. By looking at the amount of seats that stretch out in two shops and almost fully occupied scene at 2.30PM, we know that we’ve underestimated the power of Annie 1 all this while. Long list of food on their menu, covering from the most famous wantan mee to curry mee, chee cheong fun, nasi sambal ikan bilis with fried chicken/pork curry, fried rice with deep fried chicken drumstick, har siew rice, chicken rice, as well as comfort food including braised pork trotter rice, stew pork and egg rice and Foo Yong egg rice. Most items are priced below RM10. Ideal for quick, cheap meal in Damansara Uptown.
We made an order of Dry Wantan Mee with Char Siew Wanton, Chee Cheong Fun with Pork Skin Curry and Ipoh Kopi. Heard that Annie 1 has pretty good Homemade Caramel Custard Egg dessert too but since we will be hopping to Miru Dessert Cafe few doors away later, we made a skip on this.
Dry Wantan Mee with Char Siew & Wantan RM6.80
There are more than 10 types of wantan mee you can look for, available in dry base and soup base, topped with different ingredients. You can either stick to the most basic by having only wantan, or add on char siew and dumpling; or switch to braised chicken feet, curry chicken, braised pork trotter, oyster sauce chicken, stew pork spare ribs.
Glad to say that Annie 1 wantan mee is the better version in Klang Valley, not too saucy nor oily, with mildly sweet gravy coated just nice to the springy noodles. Summerkid commented that the noodles would be better with more saltiness from sauces. Another downside is, portion is quite small, so you may want to add half noodle at RM0.70. While for double size noodle (孖面), add another RM1.20.
Wantan is minced meat filled, nothing noteworthy. Char siew however, better than expected. Thinly caramelized outer layer lacing the meat, flavourful, chewy but not rubbery. 3 pieces are not enough at all. Ala-carte order is available at RM7 (80g), RM14 (160g).
Chee Cheong Fun with Pig Skin Curry RM4.50
Rather disappointed with the chee cheong fun. Flat rice sheet wasn’t smooth, a little sticky like the texture of Kuih Talam. Curry was lacked in oomph, too pale in spiciness. Personally, we prefer richer, thicker, more coconuty broth. Not recommended.
Stew Spare Ribs RM6.20
We enjoyed the Stew Spare Ribs for its deeply flavoured meat, mellow soft in every bite. So good that Summerkid almost wanted to order a second helping.
