If ROCKU Yakiniku at Pavilion KL is said to be leading the eat-all-you-can Japanese Charcoal Grill scene in Malaysia, then perhaps, Ssikkek at Kepong KL (食客韩式自助烧烤) can be considred as the pioneer for Malaysia Korean Grill BBQ Buffet.
Located at a more quiet area in Laman Rimbunan, Kepong , Ssikkek has been around for more than 2 years by now, running by a team of friendly, polite Korean family. The restaurant focuses only on Korean BBQ Buffet, reasonably priced at just RM19.90 (Adult) /RM14.90 (Child) for lunch; RM39.90 (Adult)/ RM24.90 (Child) for dinner. Definitely cheap and affordable.
Ssikkek buffet highlights on Korean BBQ experience the authentic way, more humble, simpler and homey. Hence there will be no trace of grandeur, sophisticated design for the interior. Go casual and let the arrays of meats, seafood and home-cooked Korean hot dishes take the limelights.
Everything is on self-service so just proceed to the buffet counter and take whatever you want- beef, chicken, pork belly, prawns, squid, etc.., available in original flavours, as well as marinated version such as soya chicken, kimchi pork, wasabi pork, sesame beef, and spicy chicken.
Vegetables such as mushrooms, onions, carrots, lettuce, chilli, pumpkin, garlic, capsicum, broccoli, tomatao are available to grill along with your meat too. Remember to take more for a more balance meal, though you already know meat will outnumbered the amount of vegetable intake in this Korean BBQ buffet.
Once ready, staff will place a square, flat pan over the mini stove. It is pre-rubbed with oil to avoid raw meat from sticking to the pan. Even so, we find the burnt layer gathered up on the pan surface quite fast.
Before we have time to worry if we would eaten up too much “burnt”, staff has already come over and changed us a new pan. They are attentive enough, eye-ing over the pan on each table and replaced with new one once it is needed. Good service!
We will be happier if Ssikkek could use charcoal grill instead of mini gas stove. But this issue doesn’t lower down our excitement of meat grilling, charring edges of every piece of meat to the level we like, indulge, grill more and continue.
In case you need more varieties, Ssikkek’s kitchen is good enough to churn out hot food such as ddeokbokki (Korean rice cake), Kimchi soup, Korean pancake, deep fried chicken, braised pork, Korean rice roll and more. Not the best we have try, but draws a winning point for their delicious home-cook flavours. End the meal in Ssikkek with ice cream, the only dessert on the buffet counter.
