Kenny Hills Bakers, the new neighbourhood bakery, patisserie cum coffee place at Taman Tunku, Bukit Tunku Kuala Lumpur proves to be another noteworthy hidden gem in KL. The cafe was busy during our visit. Not sure if Kenny Hills Bakers would expand in future due to the lack of space in current location, or continue keeping low profile. We hope for the later.
Located within the shophouses of Taman Tunku Apartment (a residential area appears in blue and white), few doors away from Sid’s Pub and CIMB Bank, Kenny Hills Bakers is hard to be spotted as there is no clear shop sign. Just look for a shop behind some leafy plants, lined up with wooden tables and bright red chairs outdoor.
At Kenny Hills Bakers, seats are clearly limited, where the outdoor can fit up to less than 30 pax, and maximum of 4 persons indoor(air-conditioned) as there is only one long table with 4 high chairs inside. Hence expect to bear with the hot sun if you dropped by around noon. But you can always visit earlier in the morning, as Kenny opens as early as 7.30AM daily.
Walk into the little world of Kenny Hills Bakers, bread lovers will go gaga over pretty artisan breads, pastries, tarts, pies, quiche, croissant, scones and cakes displayed at the counter. Choices aren’t extensive and over-commercialized breads such as sausage bun, cheese buns, blueberry buns, curry chicken buns are not in sight.
Kenny Hill Bakers put more concerns on high quality, premium handmade breads prepared from organic Stoates & Sons flour. Wholemeal, rye, sourdough, baguettes, granary & grains, ciabata, olive and country breads are some of the highlights on “Breads We Bake” menu.
Gentle reminders from Kenny Hill Bakers for customers who purchase their artisan bread back home: Bread can be kept fresh for 1-2days wrapped in Kenny’s paper/bread box; It is advisable to portion and seal their breads in eco-friendly plastic bag and freeze them; they can then be warmed at 200C or toasted immediately upon removal from freezer but never refreeze once these breads have been thawed in oven/toasted; Do not warm in microwave oven or store in fridge.
Almond Croissant RM7
Customers can have simple meal in Kenny Hills Bakers by choosing readily available breads such as plain croissant, almond croissant, chocolate croissant, beef pie, chicken pie; or check out stuffed sandwiches and bagels such as Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese on Bagel (RM18), Turkey Ham & Gruyere Cheese on Croissant (RM15), Roast Beef Sandwich.
Mocha RM12
Kenny Hills Bakers serves decent coffee too, currently using Symphony blend by Infusion. Beans are combination of 100% specialty grade single origin coffees (Brazil Moutain Mogiana, Columbia Excelso Cauca Inza, Guatamela Antigua and India Kaapi Royale “R” Grade Robusta), expertly roasted by Coffex Coffee Roaster to produce full-bodied, balanced note in each cup of coffee.
Cappuccino RM10
The blend is said to go well in long black, flat white and cappuccino. Mild bitterness, a bit chocolaty accompanied by pleasant sweetness throughout.
A highly recommended place to check out. Lovely bread and coffee, service is good, despite waiting can be a bit long due to shortage in staff, but it is understandable. Kenny Hills Bakers has begun to churn out savoury breakfast, started with Eggs Flamenco – Oven baked organic eggs with Spanish chorizo (or roasted vegetables), chickpeas in spiced tomato coulis, slices of bread of the day, available from first week of March 2015 onwards.
