When this small, stand alone building is built at the back of Caffeines in Kampung Pandan KL, with the name Black Market, we were so silly to guess whether it would be a souvenir shop, florist, dry market, or at most, a place for tapas & wine, seeing that the name of Black Market doesn’t seem to relate much to ‘food’.
After much guessing, and yet we got just partially right by linking it to wine & tapas. Black Market is a – restaurant, serving contemporary cuisines in both Asian and Western touch, calling for a breakthrough with high quality Iberico pork and luscious truffle as highlights, creatively incorporated in entrees, main course and desserts.
Three outlets for Black Market currently, two in Kuala Lumpur- Kampung Pandan and St. Mary Place; another one in the latest neighbourhood mall in USJ21, Main Place. Visited their Main Place outlet last Saturday, and personally felt that this corner restaurant at GF deserves more attention from the dining crowd, either for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Just the matter of time, we believe.
The whole restaurant can be separated into three parts in general:
The more mysterious, romantic area with dim lighting, well executed in dark walls, steel webs, and exposed bricks;
The inner area near to bar counter, bright during the day thanks to the ceiling-to-floors windows that allow lots of natural lights to flow in during daytime;
Al-fresco dining area with high seats chairs and barrels’ tables, suitable as alcohol chill out place.
Truffle Potato Salad with Pork Bacon and Egg RM22.00
For salad, everything seems interesting. We had the Truffle Potato Salad with Pork Bacon and Egg, an entree that has revealed most of its ingredients through its name. If more friends are tagged along, we will surely check out the Teow Chew Pork Salad which has Chinese Teow Chew style 8 hours slow cook braised pork and braised egg served over a bed of potato vegetable salad. The description itself is enough to make us saliva dropping.
Spanish Platter RM38.00
In case you had a hard time deciding what to eat, get the staffs to recommend. Try the classic Spanish Platter that put together Jamon, mini chorizo, chorizo sarta and fresh melon in one plate. Jamon Iberico dry-cured ham steal the limelight, complex, intense in flavour with unparalleled sweet notes that goes well with refreshing, chilling munch of melon.
Presa RM68.00
Presa is one the highly recommended dishes in Black Market, featuring air-flown Spanish iberico pork neck grilled to “medium” doneness, firm, chewy with a hint of pinkish in the middle. Served on a mini pot of charcoal that burns continuously for more than 30 minutes, sided with wine sauce.
VIP’s Oriental Scampi Baked Rice RM78.00
VIP’s Oriental Scampi Baked Rice is created by the group of founder for a highly respected CEO from Hong Kong, utterly delicious and we stamped it as the must have! Baked in Western style, taste in good old oriental flavours.
Break open the thick, cheesy top layer, a bed of golden, aromatic rice awaiting you to indulge it. We expect it to taste like paella, but it surprise us with fluffy, full of wok hei Chinese style fried rice, deeply infused with sweetness from the huge prawns adjacent to it. Needless to say, prawns are fresh, meaty, bouncy. Serving for two. Allowed 25 minutes cooking time.
Black Scallop Pasta RM38.00
Squid ink spaghetti tossed in spicy balsamic sauce to develop a fiery hot, tangy sensation, served with fan scallop. This pasta is not for everyone, as the appealing, sharp spiciness and sourness can be tastebud numbing.
The Five Star Truffle Egg Linguine RM33.00
Linguine cooked in white sauce, creaminess enhanced with slippery smooth egg and generous sprinkle of Parmigiano-Reggiano, the real Parmesan. Simple, but instantly turns luscious with a dollop of black truffle pate to deliver an earthy, fresh pungent contrasting flavour.
Black Market Big ‘S’ Pork Ribs RM46.00
Oven baked pork ribs coated with Black Market’s speciality ‘black’ sauce, not exactly meaty nor easily fall off the bone, but we enjoy having the meat bits by bits, accompanied by the smoky sweet sauce.
Choco Lava with Ice Cream RM20.00
End the meal with sinfully delicious dessert- Choco Lava with Ice Cream, a rich, moist chocolate cake oozing with warm, runny, chocolaty goodness from the centre, topped with vanilla ice cream
‘B’iramisum RM16.00
Not to forget is the ‘B’iramisu, a name that signifying Black Market version of tiramisu infused with coffee liquer.
