Held each year on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, Mid Autumn Festival is falling on 19th September this year. Again, it is time to celebrate with family, relatives and friends, presenting gifts of mooncakes to foster better ties. This year, Shanghai Restaurant, the premier Chinese restaurant at the JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur will offer a range of luscious mooncakes from 13th August through 19th September 2013, delicately prepared by experienced Master Chefs from Hong Kong and the team.
Flavours available this year are baked roasted chicken (RM11.00), deep fried yam paste (RM9.00), baked white lotus paste (RM9.50), snow skin with white lotus paste and single yolk (RM9.50), pandan flavoured snow skin with pineapple paste (RM9.50) and baked black sesame.
Mooncakes in Shanghai Restaurant’s are handmade, pork free with no preservatives. Hence, it is best consumed within 5 days upon purchased. While traditional and new flavours are both available, choices of mooncake in Shanghai restaurant are not as extensive like many other places but quality wise, it is one of the best around the town. In fact, the good taste and high quality speak for themselves, they do not need to be fancy to taste good.
All their mooncakes come in petite size, cute yet easy to savour to avoid greasiness.
To ensure the filling’s quality, Shanghai Restaurant prepared their own lotus paste with white lotus sourced from Hong Kong. Hence, the restaurant manage to tune a good balance of lotus paste sweetness to pair just well with the traditional baked skin, as well as snow skin.
Among all, pandan flavoured snow skin with pineapple paste is our favourite. Surprisingly good with thin, fresh snow skin flavoured up with tanginess of pineapple and sweet concoction from pandan filling. Smooth, soft bites and easily melt in mouth, we are like eating a delicate dessert more like having mooncake. Highly recommended.
For yam lover, go for the deep-fried yam paste mooncake which has a creamy, velvety smooth yam paste encased within flaky, fresh pastry.
Baked roasted chicken mooncake is the only savoury flavour in the list, which is also the most popular choice is Shanghai Restaurant. To be truth, both of us can hardly accept savoury ‘Kam Tui’ mooncake all this while, but a bite into this mooncake change our perception. Shanghai Restaurant’s version savoury mooncake is so good, boost with aroma from roasted chicken and a touch of sweetness from winter melon.
