The Barn at 1 Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur – a tapas, wine bar & restaurant that attracts our attention since its renovation stage. Located right next to the mall’s main entrance, opposite to H&M, The Barn calls for advantages to have both indoor and al-fresco dining area, allowing diners to chill out inside with music from live band, or enjoy the breeze outdoor with a pint of beer, wine or liquor.
At The Barn, expect to be welcomed with inviting ambience even before stepping in, thanks to the ceiling-to-floor glass window that gives a glimpse of the interior- shade lamps hanging from ceiling, brightly lit hue yellow light space, lots of wooden elements, high ceilings, etc.
The Barn restaurant is separated into few areas- opened area for casual family & friends dining, low tables with comfy sofa for more private business gathering, high tools and bar tables facing the live band, ideal for office group to relax after long day at work.
The Barn is pride for a wide selection of wines from all over the world, mainly from Australia, and recently added New Zealand wine. Diners can either purchase their favourite bottle back home, or enjoy in the house. House pouring red wine, white wine and liquor are available too, pairs well with food on menu.
The Barn menu spans over wide variety of choices. You can begin with bite-size tapas, followed by signature main courses such as porkilicious pork chop, slow roasted pork belly, BBQ pork ribs, pasta, pizza, wagyu beef steak, fish & chips, paprika lime chicken and cold cuts. End the meal with dessert like affogato (The Barn’s recommendation) and cakes.
We sampled signature food from The Barn, started with 6 tapas, or small plates that are ideal for sharing.
Garlic Prawn RM12.90 Mini-size prawns that you will not want to share. Small but bouncy, tangled with a faint hint of garlicky, buttery and herbs goodness.
Bacon Wrap Sausages RM12.90 A more common appetizer you can come across in many Western resturants that serve pork, generally known as “pig in the blanket”. The Barn’s version is good too, wrapping premium cocktail sausages within pork belly bacon.
Beef Skewers RM9.90 Most skewers in The Barn come in three sticks, so it depends on diners how many portion you wish to order so that everyone has a share of their wonderful grilled tapas.
Dry Roast Ribs RM12.90 Summergirl loves the Dry Roast Ribs. Hand-rubbed with Cajun spices, the pork ribs blends in generous saltiness and spiciness; looks dry physically, but as we fork through the meat, it is oh-so-tender, easily fall off the bone. Hence needless to say, awesome texture in the palate.
Crispy Pork Belly RM12.90 An easier interpretion of this addictive tapas- our Chinese siew yuk. Prepared using The Barn’s secret recipe and technique, handled with care to result in crispy skin, at the same time keeping the meat juicy. Must try!
Meatballs with Tomato Sauce RM12.90 Other promising small plates on The Barn Tapa’s menu list included Luncheon Fries, Tempura Squid Rings with Wasabi Cream, Quail Eggs with Hollandaise Sauce, Sirloin Cubes in Sherry, Belacan Chicken Wings and mussels in white wine.
Pan Seared Salmon RM31 Moving on to main dishes, seafood lovers can go for Pan Seared Salmon. Thick cut of salmon pan-seared to medium rare, served with your choice of side such as mashed potato and sauteed vegetables.
French Style Pork Chop RM29.00 Pork chop is cooked in French classic recipe, minimal in sauce to highlight the original sweetness and good flavours of the pork chop. Very meat and firm, required lots of chews but the juciness locked within is not shadowed at all. Suggested for sharing as it is quite filling.
Famous BBQ Pork Ribs RM37 Do not leave The Barn without indulge in their famous BBQ pork ribs. It lives up to its name, famous or signature as the title, it doesn’t matter, as it is definitely the must try. The meat is extra moist, deeply flavoured with The Barn best BBQ sauce freshly made in the kitchen. Very smoky with crispy charred edge, coupled perfectly with soft bone that you can munch down all together.
Aglio Olio with Crispy Pork RM23 The Barn aglio olio spaghetti is decent, heavily packed with oomph of spiciness from chilli. Roasted pork belly takes the crown in this pasta, delivering crunchy munch for the skin, set off by succulent pork belly with equal layers of fat an lean meat, adding more flavours and textures within strands of pasta. Diners who prefer milder version can request to tone down the spiciness for a more enjoyable aglio-olio.
The Famous Pork Pizza RM28 Thin, crunchy, non-chewy version pizza base topped over with assortment of pork meats, further laced with cheese (yes, a lot of cheese, the picture tells). Can’t deny this pork pizza will makes cheese lovers grin. As for those who doesn’t, don’t worry, their cheese is pleasant enough to get you tuck in more.
In short, we love The Barn. Food is good, wine is great, atmosphere is cozy and relaxing. We wish to have more food from their menu, especially steak and pork dishes. But due to the hearty portion and stomach limitation, we plan to come by again in near future. Slow Roasted Pork Belly, we will have a try on you soon!
